You can now find Spy AirTags, even on Android

Apple now gives owners of Android phones the means to detect AirTags cookies within range of Bluetooth. The new Tracker Detect app makes sure that no one is tracking your movements with these little beacons.

Apple has just released a new app for Android. The iPhone manufacturer is not really used to offering software on the platform competing with its own, but on December 13, 2021, a new app arrived in the Play Store: Tracker Detect.

Why is Apple releasing an application to detect AirTags?

This tool allows you, as the description suggests, to "search for Find My compatible object trackers that may be with you". It is an application that will detect the AirTags around you and alert you if a small beacon is tracking your movements.

Released in early 2021, AirTags are small accessories that allow owners of Apple devices to easily find their keys, wallets, or any everyday object to which you have attached these small connected beacons. Theoretically, these beacons do not allow tracking of a human being, but there are ways to get around these limitations.

In an attempt not to blame critics, Apple has released an Android application that allows you to detect AirTags around you, to make sure that no one has slipped one in your bag to monitor your movements. The application, officially available on the Play Store (even if it does not always appear during a search), is very easy to operate.

How does Tracker Detect work?

After downloading and installing the software, all you have to do is accept the general conditions of use, authorize the use of Bluetooth, and after a short tutorial, you can start the scan. Your Android phone will then search for AirTags around you for a brief minute.

If no beacon is detected, the app will simply notify you. If the app picks up the signal of an AirTag the app will allow you to ring it to detect it and will explain to you how to disable it. If they declared the beacon as "lost" then Tracker Detect will show you how to return it to its owner.

Please note, the application will only detect beacons that are separate from the device that was used for their configuration. If you are at home, next to your spouse or roommate's iPhone, the application will not worry about an AirTag, judging that we use it for its legitimate use and not for your hunt down. Only beacons disconnected from their parents' iPhones and which follow you during your travels will be listed by the application.
